truck
Johnny B asked:

I would like to know a few specific things about it. For example: Is it as easy as changing the front end and trans? Or is it more complicated than that? Does anyone know where I can get step by step instructions? Or has anyone done this before and knows exactly what to do? By the way it is on a 1994 Ford F-150. It has the 5.0 engine. But it is 2 wheel drive and for this winter and to make the truck a little more fun this summer I’d like to make it 4 wheel drive.

Shouldn’t be that hard on the F150. You need the front axle (with hubs) and suspension bits. You will also need the drive shafts and trasfer case.

It is as easy as changing the front end and Transfer case. The 4wd front end will fit your frame.

Around here, you could buy a 1994 4×4 F150 for $3000, but I’m sure that wouldn’t be any fun.

Too much work, buy a 4 wheel drive.waste of money.

You could buy something just to 4×4 in for the same price. Unless you can find a cheep parts truck, just a thought : )

It can be done…This truck has independent front suspension so the cost of the conversion will be higher since you will need a transfer box, front diff, new hubs ETC… I think your best bet will be just raise it and go for the PreRunner look and have fun that way. If you still want a 4 wheel drive your probably better off getting a truck that is a 4X4.

GOOD LUCK

I wouldn’t try to do that. I don’t even know where to begin. Save yourself some time and money and buy a truck that already has 4X4.

Sunny on 31 January, 2008 at 5:37 pm #

Best way to do this is trade it off for a 4X4.

Take truck to car lot and trade it in for a 4 wheel drive.

It can be done if your expert or good mechanic. You will need to find a donor truck or parts from one. Might be easier to pick up a good used 4×4 or one that is rusted out for cheap and swap parts.I have done this and it can ****…..getting everything right……never again and I’m a good mechanic.

I have changed 2 wheel drives into 4,it is alot of work depending on how much you know about cars.. You have to put different springs under it,maybe change your crossmember, probably a different transmission, because a transfercase will not just fit on the old one,,,,,,,ect,,,,,ect,,,,,,

Explorer Guy on 8 February, 2008 at 12:19 am #

Yup it can be done, like others stated, you need to get the axle/tranny/suspension parts/transfercase/driveshaft Unless you find a divorced transfercase then you wouldn’t have to change the transmission but then you got 2 more u-joints that can break., It can be time consuming the easiest route is to buy another one thats 4X4 but I know sometimes when a man loves his truck you do what ya gotta do. Even look in your vehicle classifieds you may find a wrecked 4X4 F-150 that you could buy cheap and use the parts from that and may not cost ya alot. Good luck!
